I do not want to reduce the history of sin in the Bible to a story of cultic failure. But I do want to suggest that a liturgical reading of Scripture enables us to better understand why Christ's “obedience” is so often cast in cultic, sacrificial, and priestly terms. The identification of Christ's redemptive work with cultic sacrifice is especially strong in those passages that most scholars agree represent christological hymns used in early Christian worship.48

The hymn in Paul's letter to the Philippians (2:6–11)49 underscores the dramatic reversal of Adam's sin. Unlike Adam, who was made in the image of God, Christ did not grasp at equality with God but, instead, offered His life in humility and obedience to God. In Hebrews, this obedience is compared to the liturgical act of high-priestly sacrifice (Heb. 9:11–28). As Israel's high priests would enter the sanctuary once a year to offer animal blood in atonement for the people's sins, Jesus enters the “true” sanctuary—“heaven itself” (Heb. 9:24)—to offer His own blood in sacrifice “to bear the sins of many” (Heb. 9:28).
